This is a very twisted case for Miss Silver. A man comes to see Miss Silver who thinks his wife is being poisoned. He has a large family mostly living in his family home, but after he marries his young wife she wants to change everything and they don’t like it. Her husband adores her, but she lies and connives to get everything she wants. Some family want to out her while others in the family house want to keep Jimmy, the owner, in the dark about his wife. Latter End A Miss Silver Mystery Patricia Wentworth 9780340767894 Books Reviews

This is the 11th (of 32) Miss Silver cozy mysteries, written between 1928 and 1961. This one is post-WWII, so there is less about rationing and privation than in the previous several books, but otherwise it follows the author's basic set-up a worthy victim whom everyone hates, a house full of suspects, and a dowdy little retired governess with a steel-trap mind and Victorian morals who knits up a storm while sorting out the multiple motives and details to get at the truth. One thing I actually dislike about Wentworth's villains is that they're always so unredeemably bad. Lois Latter is a completely selfish and self-centered woman who is fond of manipulating those around her. Having married a man for security, she keeps him wrapped around her finger while she overhauls his home and tosses people out of it along with the furniture. When she winds up dead, it's up to Miss Silver to figure out the truth, because everyone with means, motive and opportunity (which is EVERYONE) is also too nice to have committed the crime. One of my favorite things about this book is the addition of a psychic. The first ten novels in this series were quite pragmatic, but this one opens with Lois consulting a fortune-teller who makes some uncanny remarks. I wish he had turned up again later in the book, and since I'm reading the whole series in order, I hope he makes a comeback in a later entry. As usual, the police on the scene are either disbelieving of what lies before their eyes (though you'd think years of experience with Miss Silver would have taught them better) or simply admiring of her intellect. Plenty of poetry is quoted, some of it rather charming. A great book!
It took quite awhile to get into their book. Many,, many characters and their cousins were introduced. I'm sure I don't know how many time I read "Miss Silver coughed". Was this a secret code I don't understand? It did have an interesting conclusion.
Great character development. Liked Miss Silver so much more than Miss Marple. This is my first time reading this series and I'm looking forward to starting at the beginning.
I am a big fan of Miss Silver. She doesn't jump in and save the day, but sits back , thinks, and pays attention to what goes on around her. I don't expect to be surprised at the end when the murderer is revealed, but I was well into the end before I figured out where Miss Silver was headed.
Then everything turns upside down. When a self-centered woman is told to beware of poison by a fortune teller the breaks fall off the car. A dedicated family is in peril and who is to blame for a sudden death? Miss Silver to the rescue.
I love Miss Silver mysteries. They are perfectly crafted cozies, with well-defined characters and interesting settings in the vein of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. This one was not quite up to snuff. The characters were limited to just a few, in a small intimate setting. The villain of the piece was quite nasty and you could see what was going to happen well ahead. I knew who the culprit was immediately after the death and was just waiting for Miss Silver to catch up. Normally, they are more of a puzzle, so I felt a bit cheated. It's a fun read and I don't want to put anyone off of Miss Silver, but this one wasn't one of Wentworth's best.
Another pleasant visit with Miss Silver as she investigates the death of the Wife of the Manor on behalf of the Husband who stands in danger of being accused of her murder. Once more the setting for the novel is primarily the very limited focus of a Manor House. The pace is slow with a focus on character, the action more in thought than physicality. The tension tends to be low level with a range of likable or sympathetic people save for the Victim. The language is sanitary, the sex implied, the behavior neither heroic nor brutal. This is very much in the Classic British Mystery tradition, antithetical to the rapidity of action, 'vulgarity' of behavior and overt sexuality of the popular current novels. Both types have their virtues and defects; neither is inherently superior to the other. It is a matter of which the reader prefers. I, for one, applaud the fact that the ebook has brought back so many authors of Wentworth's era, a group in which she does not rank at the top but is not too from it.
