Starta shows the readers/listeners (I bought the audiobook) of his great abilities to put words together to create captivating stories. Gods of the Machines is a great read/listen and I enjoyed the story, as I do with the majority of Starta's work. The characters have great depth and they relate to each other. His humanization of the robots brings an interesting characterization. The story is plot driven, and it has great sub-plots that keep the story together. It's a remarkable out of this world, suspense story.Tags : Gods of the Machines [Gary Starta] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Gods of the Machines was much more than a science fiction mystery book. It really made the reader think about the philosophies and fears people have toward the development and future of sentient android beings, their possible rights as citizens, and where we still may or may not fit into the picture in the near future. The story is beautifully played out with richly described characters, lots of action, mystery, and of course the ultimate decision whether or not we can accept any beings in any form that may not look like us, think like us, or communicate like we do. The foundation of any great science fiction novel is in addressing today's social issues and how they may change in the future, whether it be dystopian or utupian. The author, Gary Starta has an unquenchable desire to see our future in an open and accepting way to all new forms of life. I give it a five-star rating. It would make a great film.
Gods of the machines by Gary Starta is the latest Sci Fi novel I have read and I recommend it to any adult fan of good characterization in their fantasy stories.
The story begins with an adult male and female that are in charge of exploring an unknown part of the planet Cerses and end up exploring each other sexually. As such I would only recommend this book to adults and found the story seemed more like a romance novel than a Sci Fi novel at he beginning. The lady is then murdered and the man who had the adulterous relationship with her is the obvious main suspect.
However, the plot then develops around Sam and Sandra as the detective and CSI responsible for determining who murdered the woman. Sam and Sandra came to Cerses as a couple soon to get married but find their relationship on hold and their feeling about each other in question.
Sam believes that the android, James Starkman, is the primary suspect not only in the initial murder but several that follow. Like all good Sci Fi stories there are mysteries and unbelievable events that happen that will make you want to come back for more. What I enjoyed was the deep characterization and the feeling of hope and community that comes through in the story. I did find the solving of the murder case to be a little rushed but overall enjoyed the world and characters and think this story would be a good one for both experienced and new fans of Sci Fi.
There is plenty of originality, intriguing plot and depth of characterization in this story - emotions between humans and human-form robots with human personalities ranging from mistrust to deep friendship. So, although fictional exploration of relationships between humans and 'synthetic humans' is well-trodden ground, this story has unique focus, initially around a human-form robot being suspected of homicide. Characterization is a strength in this story, which distinguishes it from much science fiction. It perhaps gets a bit cheesy when some of the original species of Ceres join the plot - a bit much waxing lyrical for my taste. There are also a fair few little words missing or repeated in the script (like 'a' and 'the') which detracts from the reading pleasure of a writing policeman like myself, but there are many passages that are engrossing. The moments of high-drama action are delivered really well the more romantic or intimate moments sometimes less convincingly. All up, it's a story that will engage readers who enjoy well-developed characters and believable relationships in their science fiction and also readers who want an exciting and original plot in their science fiction. It has enough originality for people who have read a lot of science fiction over a number of decades as well as younger readers.
People are dying mysteriously on a newly colonized world. The new cop on the rock must discover why and who is responsible? First he must get rid of his Earth mentality and start thinking like a new cop on a new planet, can he?? Detective Sam Benson and his ex-partner now turned fiance, and the new Medical Examiner Sandy arrived on a new world that has both Androids and Humans, some Androids have a past where they were instilled with Human memories, only to have them wiped as being unethical. One didn't get fully wiped clean and stayed with some memories, and guilt but he is still sentient and deserves protection under the law. The detective is faced with who is guilty cause every time he comes up with who to blame they have an alibi and then one that he'd discounted tries to kill him, only to be killed by the real killer. At the end they are looking off world for who is the killer and nearly come to a intergalactic war. Gary Starta comes up with an intergalactic tale of aliens and Humans both calling a planet home. The twists and turns that drive the Detective looking everywhere and at everyone keeps you trying to guess who done it, and you never guess it even as you read it until it all comes together at the end. There is peace on this new world, and all it's beings are moving forward toward a better understanding. The very last scene is priceless teaching the business mogul that wants to control is a perfect Jacob Marley moment and Gary captured it beautifully..The best kind of thriller, one you can't know the ending of Kudos's to the Author!!
